The Ayahuasca Foundation recognizes that more and more people are responding to this call, and we have designed an educational program to facilitate their journeys on the healing path...

A Traditional Initiation into Curanderismo

The Ayahuasca Curandero Initiation Course is intended for people who want to take their study of the Amazon healing more seriously. Students will spend 40 days straight with the shipibo curandero at the Ayahuasca Foundation’s remote jungle camp, drinking ayahuasca in ceremony up to 18 times. We will be following true plant diets with two sacred and powerful plants in solitude.

Students will be following a traditional, authentic shipibo initiation, except that the accommodations in the jungle have modern amenities like running water and a gas stove. The food will be prepared by a member of the Mishana Community who live nearby and will serve as our helpers and guides in the jungle. Students will receive initiate’s clothing made by the shipibo, according to their tradition. The curandero leads this course with total attention to the students and to the teachings of the science of healing so that everyone sees, hears, experiences, and understands plant spirit medicine to the most profound level possible in their six weeks in the Amazon Rainforest.

The course consists of doing plant diets, vapor baths, taking plant remedies, learning icaros, remedy preparation and administration, massage therapy, soplaying, chupando, prayer, and ceremony procedure. Students take part in making the ayahuasca used during the course, as well as other plant remedies. In just six weeks students learn enough to begin treating patients and holding ceremonies.

Do you feel that you are destined to be a healer?
The Ayahuasca Foundation recognizes that more and more people are responding to this call, and we have designed an educational program to facilitate their journeys on the healing path. Located in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, the Ayahuasca Curandero Initiation Courses seek to preserve and spread the wisdom of the indigenous cultures of South America. Plant Spirit Healing is the oldest form of healing on earth and we as a civilization are blessed that it has been developed and maintained for millenia, but its lineage is now in danger of being lost forever due to the spread of modern culture. This ancient wisdom must not perish. There are individuals like you who are ready to learn the philosophy and healing techniques of the curanderos, and now you have the opportunity to continue the heritage of Plant Medicine. By taking part in a course, you are taking part in the healing of humankind, as well as the healing of the Earth.

Preparing for a trip to another country can be challenging, especially when you’re going to the Amazon Rainforest. The Amazon Rainforest is not as intimidating as you might imagine, at least not the parts where you’ll be going. It is quite rare to see a wild animal, and if you do it will most likely be a monkey or a lizard. Here are the answers to many questions that people have about traveling and what to expect when they get to Iquitos and the Amazon Rainforest of Peru…

- It is not required to get any vaccinations in order to travel, however you may wish to get a yellow fever vaccination as a precaution, and getting vaccinated for Hepatitis A and Rabies is something to consider as well.

- We do not recommend that you take anti-malarial medication, as it sometimes reacts with the ayahuasca in an undesirable way. It is incredibly rare to contract malaria in the areas where course participants will be visiting or staying.

- You do not need a visa to visit Peru, but you do need your passport, which allows for up to a six month stay in Peru. It is a good idea to make a photo copy of your passport, which you can carry with you in Iquitos.

- There are many bank machines in Iquitos, so you do not need to carry a large amount of cash with you, or to purchase traveller’s checks. Bank machines dispense both US and Peruvian currency, and it is easy to exchange both Dollars and Euros for Peruvian Soles.

– Only US Dollars and Euros can be exchanged in Iquitos, so if you have any other currency that you want to exchange for Peruvian Soles, you will need to exchange your money in the airport in Lima. That will be your only opportunity to exchange anything other than dollars or euros to soles.

- Not many people in Iquitos speak anything other than spanish, so it would be a good idea to pick up a spanish phrase book and at least skim through it before arriving in Peru. Your course instructor is a bilingual translator, but it helps to know a little of the local language.

- Drink more than enough water, because dehydration can sneak up on you in the Amazon, where the temperature is usually above 90 degrees Fairenheit (32 C), with high humidity as well. It is common to be dehydrated after travelling a great distance in an airplane as well so it is especially important to drink more than enough water to ensure that you are properly hydrated during your stay in the Rainforest.

Average daily temperature in Iquitos is around 90 degrees (32C). However, at night it can get chilly, especially if it rains, and when you are in a ceremony late at night, you might find that you need your sweatshirt, or at least your long sleeve shirt. Sometimes, when you wake up in the morning, it’s still chilly as well, and a long sleeve is a nice thing to wear before heading out for the day. Socks are recommended because they keep your ankles free from insect bites, and pants are recommended when going on hikes or walking around. There will be some walking involved so you may want to bring hiking boots. Most items can be purchased in Iquitos if you forget something.

Suggested Items to Bring:
- Backpack
- Insect repellent
- Antibacterial lotion
- Sunscreen
- Flashlight or headlamp
- Light sheet or blanket (or sleeping bag)
- Raincoat or poncho
- Hiking Boots (optional but a good idea)
- 3 pairs pants
- 3 pairs shorts
- 7 short sleeve shirts
- 2 long sleeve shirts
- 1 hooded sweatshirt
- 8 pairs of underwear
- 8 pairs of socks
- Bathroom items – toothbrush, floss, shampoo, etc.
- 2 towels, 1 small towel
- travel alarm clock or watch
- 3 Bic brand lighters

“Hi my name is Jacob and I am 31 years old and I’m from Los Angeles, California. I came down to Peru to drink ayahuasca because of a lot of changes that were going on in my life. I should probably tell a little bit about me. Back in the default world I’m a very successful professional in the entertainment industry. I had gotten, sort of, to the pinnacle of my career; released critically acclaimed, popular media; have a house by the beach; awesome car… really, living the American dream. But as I reached this point where I had all of this success, I was getting more and more depressed because I realized that materialism is hollow. I would just be going for more success and more stuff, getting getting acquiring more. Getting a hot wife and a cool family and all of these different things and it would all just be getting things because that’s what I’m supposed to do and impress people and have things. So… I didn’t know what to do and I was like if this is all life is, why keep going? And thankfully, and that moment in my life when I didn’t know what else to do a friend of mine introduced me to psychedelics, and that started a whole new direction in my life where I started looking into all of the legitimate research about psychedelics as psychiatric medicine, as a healing agent, as medicine.

Peru has a 2,500 year tradition of using ayahuasca, which is a very powerful psychedelic, as medicine. So, over the next two years, my research led me to Peru. I certainly looked into western psychiatric care. I spoke with psychologists and psychiatrists and did a lot of research about different pharmaceuticals available. I tried out anti-depressants but none of them really worked for me, and then I came to Peru and found the Ayahuasca Foundation, which is just incredible. It is everything I could possibly have hoped. The people running the Ayahuasca Foundation, Carlos Tanner and don Enrique Lopez are just the most consummate business professionals. These guys know what they’re doing. They are healers of the highest order and believe deeply in the science of plant medicine and psychedelics as a psychiatric care aid. And I am happy to say that my depression is completely healed now and not only that but I have so much more understanding of why its healed and the research that has been done by western professionals about how it works and also the research done by traditional indigenous peoples about how it works.

It’s just been really amazing to come down here. I was familiar with the research by Dr. Rick Strassman and also Dr. Charles Grob but Carlos has a fantastic library here of other research like I learned all about the work done by Dr. Bruce Lipton here, who wrote Biology of Belief. That book completely changed my perspective on life and how we have the power within us to heal ourselves and how psychedelics as a form of psychiatric medicine make you aware of your own power. I learned all about epigenetics here. I had never heard of it before. This has just been a crash course in both the western science of cutting edge psychiatric medicine and also traditional indigenous psychiatric medicine and it’s exactly what I came to Peru for and it’s what I wanted and I got it in spades. I could not possibly have imagined how incredible this course would be.

The accommodations at the camp are just fantastic. I’ve done a lot of roughing it, as it were. I’ve hiked sections of the Appalachian Trail and I know my way around a forest and I was really expecting to have a bathroom that was a hole in the ground with spiders all over it and stuff like that and it is not like that. We have these beautiful, completely enclosed, screened in rooms. There are solar panels for light. We each have our individual bathrooms and showers, which is amazing. The quality of the construction of the camp is great, it’s just a beautiful place. The Mishana community is just so warm and welcoming and friendly and they all just really want to talk to you and invite you to learn about them and their culture. They’re just so happy to be here. The love it here and they want you to love it here. Just so hospitable and wonderful. It’s been not only a very rigorous training course but also just a beautiful, relaxing vacation.

I learned a fantastic amount about curanderismo. I suppose what I expected was a traditional and cultural system of healing steeped in tradition but what I got from don Enrique and Carlos was a real understanding of the science of plant medicine. I think when I came to this course I still had my very western prejudices about medicine in the developing world and thought that, well, there’s no way they can possibly know as much as our doctors. But it’s really fascinating to me how much more they know about certain things than western medicine. Western medicine is absolutely fantastic at certain things, like trauma. If you get a gunshot wound you want to be in a Western hospital. It’s awesome for that. But if you want to talk about health over the long term, if you want to talk about chronic illness, chronic pain, these guys know more about that than I could have ever imagined. I had a lot of doubts coming in here and I was very honest with them. On the bus ride out to the camp, as we were going to our boat to go upriver I told Carlos that I had a lot of doubts and I would be very skeptical and I would be asking a lot of questions and he welcomed my skepticism and he was happy to talk with me and also help me talk to don Enrique because I don’t speak Spanish, (he was a fantastic translator) so that both of them could directly address all of my skepticism and all of my questions and all of my doubts. I continued to have challenges to my beliefs because I have 31 years of beliefs built up but they continued to support me and I am just ecstatic about the world they have opened up to me with curanderismo and all the ways it can work in tandem with western medicine and create a better whole than I had ever imagined was possible. I, as I think many westerners, had really come to accept that I was going to die of the same genetic diseases as my father and my mother’s brother and all of these different people who I knew in my family who had died of lymphoma or suddenly in their sleep or things like that. My family has a lot of history of lymphoma. Nearly everyone I know has died of it and western medicine can keep you alive for seven more years, something like that, but curanderismo suggests ways that you can avoid ever getting it. That sort of thing, again sounded like hocus pocus to me before I came here, but after a six week course, really spending every day studying and learning, and reading western research that suggests why its true, and really focusing on…

Here’s the thing that really got me. What I think helped me the most was the understanding that what we call the placebo effect is what curanderismo focuses on. They say that’s not the placebo effect, that’s the effect. When you believe that something can heal you, that belief gives your body the power to heal itself, and that is the fundamental tenet of curanderismo. Again, I had all sorts of skepticism, and I know that somebody watching this and seeing me talk about this this way may have a lot of skepticism like, oh, that sounds like hippie talk, but I urge you to come here and speak with Carlos and speak with don Enrique and learn from them why they believe that that is the case and how logical it is that it is the case once you really learn about how the science of curanderismo works.

I’d also like to note that I’m really a very straight laced guy. I’ve spent my life really focused on my career and being a law abiding citizen and a good patriot and just an all around good person and it was a hard thing for me to overcome, the idea of taking a psychedelic because, unfortunately, they’re not legal in America, but they helped me so much. They showed me that it was possible to feel ok, it was possible to feel centered and not scared and not neurotic and actually find reasons to live that made sense. So, coming to Peru was really great for me because it’s not that it’s just legal here, it’s not a loophole. It’s that it’s respected here. It’s a legitimate thing that people do as a matter of course. Carlos’ wife is a lawyer and she was with us at a ceremony and that’s very very common. It’s very common for people with professional jobs who are contributing to society to drink ayahuasca and to use it to help them become better people and to overcome their fears and difficulties and worries and illnesses. So, I think that Peru is just a wonderful wonderful place to come if you need help to overcome the prejudices that you might have towards psychedelics as a medicine.

If you are the sort of person who is interested in any way in psychedelics as a medicine, as a psychiatric aid, if you are interested in cutting edge science, if you have found the limits of western medicine or the limits of western beliefs, if you’ve hit the ends of them and realized that your faith in western medicine promises you only death, ultimately, then for any of those reasons, I urge you to come down here to the Ayahuasca Foundation and study with Carlos Tanner and don Enrique Lopez and learn about the science beyond that. Accept everything that you know about western medicine, accept it, accept that it is powerful and healing and wonderful and we are so lucky to have it, but that there is more and there’s 2500 years of incredibly detailed science on how you can heal things that we never thought were healable, and how you can make the life that you have available to you so much more healthy and vibrant and beautiful. I would certainly urge you to bring your doubts and bring your skepticism and tell Carlos and don Enrique and let them prove to you as they proved to me that curanderismo is not only a beautiful and detailed traditional science, but it is also the new science. It’s where western medicine is going now. It is epigenetics. It’s all of these new things that we’re just finding. It is quantum theory. They will be utterly ecstatic to tell you about how all of that is the case, and if you think that you’re open, even in the slightest, to hearing what they have to say, please come down and learn from them. It will be one of the best experiences of your life. It has completely changed mine.”

“Hi, my name is Skye. I’m 23 years old and I’m from South Africa. I’ve been drinking ayahuasca for a number of years so I was already aware of the healing potential of ayahuasca and I had a really strong connection to it so I wanted to totally immerse myself in the experience and also learn the science of curanderismo and really learn how to work with ayahuasca on a healing level, both on myself and others.

The course was phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal. Incredible. It was phenomenal. Hard to find words for it. I mean, in my experience, ayahuasca kinda peels back the layers, almost like that of an onion, and at the center is your divinity. Ayahuasca is peeling away your self limiting beliefs. She’s peeling away your habits that are standing in the way of your divinity, your fears, your emotions that block that light, your goodness, your god mind, and every time you drink ayahuasca and work with the curanderismo, you’re peeling back those layers. So much was peeled back. So much. At the same time, she introduces you to this world of spirits that I didn’t even know existed and other dimensions and really got into the multi-dimensional, multi-layered complexity of reality. You learn to work with it and it totally expands everything. It’s incredible, and at the same time, she’s really doing deep healing on you in a physiological way, in an emotional way, in a psychological way, and in a spiritual way. She’s healing your soul, every aspect of you. It’s a very very very holistic experience. She did all of that for me and more and it was beautiful, really beautiful.

It was really comprehensive. We learned how to clean our bodies, first of all, using various plants and vegetation, which was interesting. It was tough, it was one of the tougher parts of the course. The beginning was a little bumpy but it definitely smoothed out after that. We learned how to do various kinds of healing techniques and how to really really get into the experience, how to rise above it, how to work with it, how to interact with ayahuasca, with the spirits, work with them to heal not only ourselves but others, which was really amazing. It was very comprehensive. Carlos and Enrique cover all the bases and the translation was very clear, very beautiful.

The accommodations are amazing. I’ve been in Peru for a few months before here and have experienced a number of different lodges. This one blows them all out of the water. No question. No doubt about it. It’s like you are in the jungle. You are in a community of people who have been here for almost a hundred years, and surrounded by the people who live here and at the same time you are living in this beautiful comfort. In all the camps I’ve been to, the bugs at this one are the least problem, which is awesome. I don’t have a huge issue with them but when they’re not always around you it really helps. The beds, the bathrooms, everything, the decks, just the whole setup, it’s just beautiful, really beautiful. Mishana itself really adds to the experience. You have the entire community here, looking after you, supporting you, so friendly, really happy to share their lives with you and integrate with you the whole time and it’s not just a bunch of people in a camp in the middle of the jungle. You are constantly interacting with the community, which really transforms the experience, especially for me.

Don Enrique is magnificent. Also, before here, I worked with a number of different curanderos and, man, no one has come close. I am so grateful. I have found my teacher. Without a doubt, I found my teacher. I found my path. I’m even getting goose bumps saying it. He’s beautiful. He’s so humble, so humble, so friendly, generous. That is something that’s really hard to find in a curandero, someone who is generous with his knowledge. There’s a lot of ego that happens when you start to get these beautiful healing powers and a lot of the time they don’t want to share their knowledge with people from the west, but he is so generous with it. He’s got this vision of training us to go into the world and heal because he understands that that’s what the world needs right now. That is what we need to help the planet, to help the jungle. He is totally in that. He’s giving all the time, never stops. Ask a question and he will answer your question. It’s just amazing. He doesn’t hold back, absolutely doesn’t hold back. He teaches you from his heart, from his soul. In Buddhism there is a term, bodhicitta, it is the heart of awakening, and you can see his bodhicitta, you can feel his bodhicitta. It’s all encompassing, all enveloping. He works very well with Carlos. The two of them are very good at transmitting the knowledge, if you don’t understand Spanish. He also adds his own flavor. The two of them make an amazing duo. It was beautiful, perfect.

I would say that if you are ready to let go of your stuff that is preventing you from becoming all that you can be, if you are ready to ride out the bumps, because there will be bumps, and it can be hard, and it’s not all sunshine and roses, it really isn’t, but all the hard work does pay off, and if you’re ready to work hard, if you’re ready to get stuck into the curanderismo, which is the pillar of the experience; we are not just taking a cup of ayahuasca from a man in the jungle, we are studying curanderismo. If you are here study curanderismo, really get stuck into the science that comes with the plant medicine, then I say come on out and be ready, be ready to have your life totally changed.

Thank you so much. Thank you for giving me the real education that I have been wanting my whole life, Carlos and Enrique. Thanks.”

Christian talks about his experiences during the Spring 2011 Initiation Course and his views on the Ayahuasca Foundation and the healing traditions.

“Hi, I’m Christian Chapman. I’m 21 years old and I’m from the town of Easton, CT, but I currently live in Los Angeles. I’ve always had an interest in the study of inspiration and what brings about something as abstract as inspiration. People go their whole lives struggling to find it. I think psychedelics are a great key. I’ve always wanted to come down to the Amazon Rainforest and I figured what better way to do it than to come down and learn the ways of curanderismo and ayahuasca. I learned more than I could have possibly imagined. I feel like I’ve been learning things that I don’t even know that I’m learning. I’m just being given gifts from other dimensions from other dimensions all the time and I just feel it inside of me and it’s just incredible. I could never have expected this kind of teaching. It’s really really unique.

Something very special is going on down here at the Ayahuasca Foundation, in the Rainforest, something very ancient and incredible is being kept alive and it’s resurging and this place is really on the forefront of that. I feel like, coming here, we’re all cadets… space cadets or I don’t know. Just students of the universe really, learning how to become white blood cells of the world. It’s a launch pad, this place, really. It’s like a spring board into the rest of your life. That’s the way I feel. I’m almost certain it’s going to be true for me and almost everyone else that’s here. It’s a completely international affair. It’s amazing. The people you meet from all corners of the world, the best people you’ll ever meet, all here for a common purpose and that’s pretty much evolving for a common purpose. That’s what we have to be doing. It’s a righteous mission that this place is keeping alive.

The camp here is just amazing. It’s awesome. Very comfortable. Huge maloca. The local community is something I had no idea I would expect. They’re just the best people I’ve met in the entire world. You can’t believe they’re real, so warm and welcoming and open to our presence. Carlos is really giving back to them. It’s great. It’s an amazing symbiotic relationship with the jungle people. They all want to teach us the ins and outs of jungle life every chance they get. There’s some many places to learn so many people to learn from: the other people in the course, the shamans… stuff to be learned everywhere. You cannot not learn. Amazing.”

Andrea talks about her experiences during the Ayahuasca Foundation's 2011 Spring Curandero Initiation Course.

“Hello my name is Andrea. I’m 40 years old and I’m from Canada. I heard about ayahuasca a few years ago and I was interested in it then, and then I forgot about it. I was travelling and then, probably about, August of last year, I read a book and this guy had travelled around the world looking for enlightenment or the meaning of life and one of the chapters at the end he went to Spain and drank ayahuasca and that changed his entire life, cured his depression, just changed everything. Just changed everything, so that really interested me in coming down. So then I came down to Peru.

Wow, this location is perfect. I couldn’t imagine a better place to be. The jungle is just amazing, the sounds at night, the community being here, I couldn’t ask for a better place. It’s probably one of the best experiences I’ll ever do in my life. It’s changed me in so many ways. I’ve learned so many things from the ayahuasca, from the people here, from Carlos. It’s just changed everything. It’s been incredible.

The most important thing that I’ve learned… my connection with God. I’ve always had some of a connection and I think that’s what I’ve been searching for all my life really and through ayahuasca and being here I know that I’m connected to God and I know there is a God. I went straight to God one night and he’s been with me ever since and I can call on him whenever I want and he’s always there and that’s just phenomenal.

I’d say do some research ‘cause I’m not sure ayahuasca is for everybody, but I would definitely recommend this course. You learn a lot about yourself. You learn a lot about plant medicine. Don Enrique is just an incredible teacher. The whole course in the six weeks, the way Carlos has set it up is just been perfect. Really perfect and I would really recommend it to anybody. Do a little research about ayahuasca first and read the website and then, just go for it.”
